When John first came to me at Wicked Pass Driving School, he was carrying the weight of two failed practical driving tests. He had found us on Google, drawn in by the reviews left by other students, and decided to give driving lessons one more chance. 

That decision took real courage. After two setbacks with a previous instructor, John had begun to wonder whether becoming a driver was simply not meant for him.

Challenges To Overcome

John's biggest challenge was not technical, it was mental. Two failed tests had left a deep mark on his confidence, and when he arrived for his first lesson with me, that self-doubt was written all over him. He was hesitant, cautious, and genuinely unsure whether he had what it takes to pass.

Beyond the confidence issue, there were clear areas of his driving that needed attention. His road positioning needed work, and he was struggling with roundabouts, particularly mini roundabouts where approach speed, observations and decision making all need to come together quickly. 

Lane discipline and his understanding of traffic lights, including filtered traffic lights, were also areas where he needed focused support.

How We Tackled Them Together

Before anything else, I booked John in for a full assessment lesson. This gave me the opportunity to properly evaluate his driving ability, identify his strengths as well as his weaknesses, and understand exactly what had gone wrong in his two previous tests. Going in with that knowledge meant we could build a training plan that targeted the right areas from the very start.

We worked systematically through every aspect of his driving that needed improvement. Roundabouts became a key focus, with plenty of practice on both mini and standard roundabouts until his approach, speed management and observations became second nature. 

We also spent dedicated time on lane discipline and traffic light awareness, including filtered junctions, so that nothing on test day would catch him off guard.

Alongside the technical work, I made sure John understood the difference between minor, major and dangerous faults. Knowing why something matters, and what the consequences of a mistake could be, helped him to drive more thoughtfully and with greater awareness on every lesson.

The change in John across his lessons was really pleasing to see. With each session his driving became more assured, his decisions sharper, and his positioning more consistent. 

Just as importantly, his belief in himself began to return. We always made sure to encourage him when he made mistakes rather than dwelling on them, keeping the lessons positive and forward-moving.

By the time his test date arrived, John was a different driver to the one who had walked through the door at the start. He was calm, prepared, and ready.
