Owen Brett Passed His Driving Test!
About Owen
When Owen first messaged me at Wicked Pass Driving School, he was in a situation that would have knocked anyone's confidence. He had been training with another instructor and had been told he was ready to apply for his practical driving test. He booked it, as any learner would.
Then, with his test already in the diary, he was told he needed another 25 hours of training before he would be ready, and that he would not be able to use his instructor's car on the day.
Two weeks out from his test, Owen was left without a car, without a plan, and without much reason to believe the date he had waited for was still achievable. Rather than give up on it, he got in touch with me.
Challenges To Overcome
The most obvious challenge was time. Owen had a fixed test date and very little of it left. There was no room for a slow rebuild, so whatever we did had to be focused and had to count.
On the technical side, there were three clear areas holding him back. His multi-lane discipline needed work, his road positioning was inconsistent, and roundabouts were a genuine weak point.
Roundabouts ask a driver to judge approach speed, choose the correct lane, make effective observations and commit to a decision, all in a matter of seconds, and Owen was not yet doing that with any confidence.
Underneath all of it was the bigger issue. Being told he was not ready, so close to his test, had left him doubting whether he was as capable as he had been led to believe.
How We Tackled Them Together
We started with a trial lesson so I could assess exactly where Owen's driving stood, rather than working from anyone else's assumptions about him. That gave me an honest picture of his ability and let me be straight with him about what was realistic in the time we had.
What I found was a learner who was a good deal closer to test standard than he had been told. He did not need to start again. He needed targeted work on the specific areas that were letting him down.
So that is what we did. We worked on multi-lane discipline until choosing and holding the correct lane became automatic.
We tightened up his positioning so it was consistent rather than something that varied from junction to junction. Most of all, we drilled roundabouts, mini and standard, until his approach, lane selection and observations came together as one smooth process instead of three separate things to think about.
Alongside the technical work, I made a point of telling Owen what he was doing well. When someone has been told they are not ready, they stop noticing their own progress. Part of my job was to make sure he could see it.
Owen's Progress
Ten hours. That was all it took.
Across those lessons Owen's driving sharpened up considerably. His lane choices became decisive, his positioning settled, and roundabouts stopped being the thing he dreaded and became something he simply handled. As the driving improved, so did his belief in himself, and by the end he was approaching his test date as someone who expected to pass rather than someone hoping to scrape through.
What Owen Said
"I only had 10 hours with him and he made me a ten times better driver and passed with only one minor." – Owen Brett
The Result
Owen sat his practical driving test at Chilwell Driving Test Centre and passed first time, with just one minor fault.
Ten hours of quality training, against the 25 he had been told he still needed. It was a brilliant result, and a reminder that the right instruction matters far more than the number of hours on the clock.
Owen's Full Testimonial
"Absolutely legend. Two weeks before my test my instructor said I was not ready and can't take the test in her car, so I messaged Ash and we had a trial lesson and then after had 10 hours of quality training to be ready for the test.
Ash is a top instructor, genuine and honest and a great teacher, and is very patient with you and will help you become a great driver. I only had 10 hours with him and he made me a ten times better driver and passed with only one minor. Great guy and even better instructor, highly recommend. Thank you mate "
Could This Be Your Story?
If you have been told you are not ready, or you have a test booked and no car to take it in, do not assume the date is lost. Sometimes it is not more hours you need; it is the right ones.
